BBL04 International players – Part 2
- Updated: December 6, 2014

While the first part of this article focuses on all-rounders, part 2 takes a look at the specialist batsmen and bowlers from abroad.
ALEX HALES (Hurricanes)
PRICE: $59,600 (BBL), 100k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Batting average (30.09), batting strike rate (140.05)
FORM: Has had a strong year in T20 internationals, averaging 36 at a strike rate of 143 across his 12 outings for England in 2014.
BRIEF: Started brightly in BBL03 but offered very little after that. A world class T20 opening batsman, now hopefully more used to Australian conditions, he’s priced in line with his BBL03 performances in the BBL competition an represents great value.
KEVIN PIETERSEN (Stars)
PRICE: $93,500 (BBL), 100k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Batting average (32.07), batting strike rate (132.45)
FORM: Hasn’t played since August. He did play 11 T20’s between July-August but only managed to average 23 with the bat.
BRIEF: Big risk to pick a semi-retired player who will even be using Victorian Premier Cricket to find some form leading into BBL04.
MICHAEL CARBERRY (Scorchers)
PRICE: 92,500(BBL), TBA (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Batting average (30.89), batting strike rate (120.61)
FORM: Performed well across the English T20 competition, averaging 33 at a strike rate of 134.
BRIEF: He’s not the battler we saw in the tests but I’d be inclined to take one of the many Australian batsmen who have proved themselves in the BBL over Carberry.
DWAYNE SMITH (Sixers)
PRICE: $89,000 (BBL), 85k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Batting average (26.23), batting strike rate (130.42)
FORM: Didn’t have a good Champions League with a top score of 20 from the 5 games.
BRIEF: Very hit and miss opening batsman. Could do great things but again I’d prefer someone with more quality performances in Australia under their belt. Listed as an all-rounder in both competitions despite doing very little bowling in recent years.
MICHAEL LUMB (Sixers)
PRICE: $61,100 (BBL), 70k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Batting average (24.34), batting strike rate (140.15)
FORM: Had a quiet English T20 season, averaging just 18 at a strike rate of 124.
BRIEF: We’ve seen him in plenty of Australian T20’s now and know what he has to offer. Handy player capable of fast starts but falls short of the quality batsmen.
EOIN MORGAN (Thunder)
PRICE: $91,100 (BBL), 100k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Batting average (26.54), batting strike rate (131.11)
FORM: Poor T20 international year for England, averaging just 21 at a strike rate of 134.
BRIEF: Quality player but at that price it’s tough to justify picking a middle-order batsman who doesn’t bowl.
Player | AVG | SR |
Pietersen | 32.07 | 132.45 |
Carberry | 30.89 | 120.61 |
Hales | 30.09 | 140.05 |
Morgan | 26.54 | 131.11 |
Smith | 26.23 | 130.42 |
Lumb | 24.34 | 140.15 |
YASIR ARAFAT (Scorchers)
PRICE: $101,200 (BBL), 85k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Bowling strike rate (16.0), economy rate (7.93)
FORM: Still playing Pakistani First-class cricket so not a lot of recent T20 form to work with. Lined up for Perth in the Champions League in September and took 6 wickets from 4 matches but conceded a lot of runs.
BRIEF: Will once again be the death bowler of choice for Perth. That usually means a few wickets or an ugly economy rate.
SAMUEL BADREE (Heat)
PRICE: $72,500 (BBL), 85k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Bowling strike rate (21.2), economy rate (5.08)
FORM: Hasn’t played since the Caribbean T20 in August where he took with 6th most wickets in the competition with 11 at a remarkable economy rate of 4.41.
BRIEF: The West Indian leggie is extremely difficult to get away so expect consistent economy rate bonuses as well as the odd bag of wickets if batsmen are forced to throw the bat at him. Generously priced in both competitions.
DANIEL VETTORI (Heat)
PRICE: $79,700 (BBL), 85k (Fox Sports)
THE NUMBERS: Bowling strike rate (23.2), economy rate (6.26)
FORM: Just played his first test match since 2012. This is surely a good sign for his physical health which has held him back at times in previous editions of the BBL.
BRIEF: You know he’ll give you solid numbers with the ball but keep an eye out for where he bats. With all-rounders such as Flintoff, Christian, Cutting and Hopes in the team, expect Brisbane to bat quite deep and for Vettori to bat lower than he would for other teams. A bowler in the BBL competition but an all-rounder in Fox Sports.
Player | SR | ER |

Badree | 21.2 | 5.08 |
